CHAPTER 13

Marko smacked Connor's face a couple of times, trying to wake him up.

"Connor! Wake up, can you hear me?", Marko asked anxiously.

Connor's fingers began to move, and he started to come to. He opened his eyes and jerked back in surprise. As he started to remember what had happened, he felt his body tense and took a swing at Marko without realizing who it was.

Marko pushed himself back and caught Connor's fist as it came towards him.

"Easy, amigo, easy, it's me, Marko. Everything is OK", he said in a reassuring tone.

Connor calmed down and as the room started spinning less, he rubbed the back of his head.

"What happened?", Marko asked, helping Connor sit up against the wall.

Connor blinked a few times, trying to clear the cobwebs from his head.

"I…I was searching the houseboat. When I came in, I found the place a mess. Some…someone had clearly searched it, but I thought maybe they didn't find whatever they were looking for", Connor started to explain.

Connor tried to stand but Marko stopped him.

"Easy, take a few minutes. You were out cold and that looks like a nasty knock on your head", he suggested.

Connor sat there, trying to remember exactly what had happened. After a few minutes the room wasn't spinning quite as badly, and his memory was starting to come back to him.

"I think I found what they were looking for. It's a journal. Dirk's journal. It was in a hidden compartment in the desk over there", Connor started to explain, pointing towards the desk.

Marko looked where Connor was pointing and spotted the desk.

"Is the journal still in the compartment?", he asked.

Connor shook his head, and he quickly wished he wouldn't have. A stinging pain shot through the back of his head.

"No, I read a bit of it and then put it on top of the desk", Connor said.

Marko stood up and walked to the desk but saw nothing on top. He bent down and looked underneath where he saw the once hidden compartment still open.

"There's nothing here amigo, where do you think it is?", he asked as he walked back to Connor.

Connor sighed, now standing.

"Then that had to be what they were looking for. They probably took it after knocking me out", he reasoned.

Marko nodded in agreement.

"That would make sense. What did it say, was it something worth all of this?", he asked.

"I think so, it said quite a bit. Let’s just say that Kate and Rick might not be as innocent as they claimed."

Connor spent the next few minutes explaining what he had read about Kate's attraction to Dirk and about Rick's odd behavior that made Dirk question if he could trust him.

"Damn. This sounds bad, even if only half of it is true", Marko said.

Connor paused before mentioning the last thing he found in the journal.

"And there is one more thing", Connor started.

Marko looked surprised and sighed.

"You mean there is more?", he asked.

"There is, and I think it is a big one. There was a small piece of paper in the back of the journal.
